How Do The Children Come to CGS Foster Care?
Children enter the foster care system in many different ways. Some children are deemed abused or neglected by the New York City child protective services agency known as the Administration for Children’s Services, while others may be voluntarily placed in foster care due to parental inability to care for their children. Older children may be placed in foster care on a PINS petition (Persons In Need of Supervision) and require higher levels of support to manage their education, behavior or mental health needs.
Typically the child protective services jurisdiction conducts an investigation and assessment of the circumstances surrounding an allegation of abuse or neglect. If a child is not deemed in imminent risk of harm, they may remain with their family of origin with support and services to keep the family intact.
However, if a child is deemed in need of immediate protective intervention, they will be removed from their home and placed either with a relative resource OR in many instances placed at a facility with other waiting children, until an appropriate foster home can be identified.
